Green energy's growing pains

Charlotte Observer -- Siemens Energy's 825-job announcement this week gave a big bounce to Charlotte's growing energy hub, which promises to help refocus the city's banker-intensive image.

Far fewer so far are the jobs in green energy, such as solar power and energy efficiency, that Gov. Bev Perdue and President Obama have touted. All but four of the 15 energy-jobs announcements the Charlotte Chamber has made in the past two years focused on nuclear or fossil-fueled power.

I am still wondering where all these green jobs are too as they were promised to us a year ago when the 2nd stimulus bill was passed.

A focus on nuclear, especially with the newer technology that boosts efficiency and reduces waste, is a good thing... we just have to be very careful where and how we build the reactor units.

It'll be interesting to continue to follow this. When 11 of the 15 announcements are oriented towards nuclear (probably good) and fossil fuel (usually bad), they don't sound like they're off to a good start. They need to be more inventive.

more r&d needed for solar panels to make them smaller. they are too big and bulky for average person to be able to use them for anything significant.

Sometimes it takes a lot of pain to move forward. The negative and the ‘I will do it like in the past’ thinkers have to be bypassed so progress can continue. Renewable energy from solar, wind, thermal, tidal, hydro and/or nuclear – support the national electrical grid.

Obozo is still plotting to implement his brainchild of employing people to replace light bulbs in office complexes. Gee, I wonder why we haven't heard much more about that idiotic plan of his?

No financing = no projects = no jobs.

Fix that, keep govt out of it, then verify it is viable.

I say verify because a feasibility study should be done before seeking financing. Don't even start if you can't turn a profit.

How many years until it has paid for itself must be part of the picture. Just like when you decide to repair or replace your furnace, roof or car.

As uncertain as the economy is, companies are putting money in proven technology where the return is predictable. They aren't going to sink a lot into R&D until they are making money some where else.

With such a low economy, the need for fuel has gone down with the other sales. It is still needed, and with the price going up with fossil fuels the job will be put to work.

Where are all of these alleged GREEN jobs to be generated by the current administration? I believe that a lot of the money set aside for this concept has already been plundered or mis re-directed elsewhere. SCAM.
