Could High Gas Prices Hurt Obama's Reelection Campaign?

U.S. News & World Report -- Now that the unemployment rate is marching downward, the GOP might have to find another economic woe to harangue President Obama about. If they look to their local gas pump, they could be in luck.

Thanks to tensions in the Middle East and refinery closures stateside, experts are projecting gasoline prices to jump 60 cents by Memorial Day. That's on top of an 11-cent spike over the past four weeks on the already sky-high gas prices Americans saw in January, the highest on record.

Experts say prices could even jump to $5 per gallon in cities such as New York and Chicago, and that pain at the pump could translate into some pain at the polls for Obama.

The gas prices have been outrageous for years, legal pirating of our hard-earned money. Big Oil's profit margin ffor gas vs oil price every single year since 2008 and that won't change with a republican president.

Do I need to remind you who was president when gas and oil prices started taking off for outer space, George W. Bush, who repeatedly deregulated Wall Street commodity trading so often that the CFTC cannot fix the mess that this idiot started, which led to Big Oil becoming the new EnRon, robbing us blind and increasing their profit margin for gas every year now, even though are gasoline purchases go down every year now. What major BS and our government would rather go after movie download sites than Big Oil and speculators.

Seasonally, prices will likely be dropping. Hopefully, his ratings will be too.

You don't need to look very far to see where Obama has screwed up! The only reason unemployment is going down (by government standards) is the fact that people have stopped receiving unemployment checks and are no longer counted. Nor are the underemployed and self employed who are not making any money.

$14 trillion in debt...Do you really need many more reasons?

Based on his performance, he should be too embarrassed to run for a second term.

I'd pay $8/gallon for the rest of this year if that's what it takes to flush that "community organizer" down the toilet in November.

Just wait...90 days before the election gas will begin to drop. It will be at an all time low weeks before the election. An voters have an extremely short memory...at least thats what most politicans seem to think.

Yes, with higher energy prices, lower employment/incomes, the "change" didn't give the result

What a joke: "now that the unemployment rate is marching downward"

Of course the unemployment rate looks better. It's what happens when 3 million workers give up and are no longer "counted" in the fuzzy math figures.

Also, starting mid-month of January 2012, the Feds came up with a new skewed method of calculating the unemployment figure.

Obama stopped the Keystone pipeline and the jobs that went with it. He is into green tech that is not yet ready but wasting tons of taxpayer dollars financing them just so they can go bankrupt.

I'm going to buck the trend of the other posters who love to gripe and fume about the President - frankly, high gas prices would hurt ANY president in office.

Doesn't matter if it were President Romney, President Paul, President Gingrich, or President Obama.

High gas prices affect ALL Americans. As a rampant capitalist, I'll work hard, make the best deal I can in the marketplace, and drive efficiently.

It doesn't matter what Obama does, there is a part of the electorate that would vote for him no matter what he does. Even being part of a murder of a boarder agent

The Obama administration wants to see high prices, it helps their clean energy cause. All while the common person has to suffer.

"How about pinning the recession on him? (It has about equal amount of truth as gas prices.)"

=========================

No, the recession lays at the feet of Pelosi and Reid.

Gas prices are Obama's due to his monetary policies.

Does a one-legged duck swim in circles?

Obama, and nothing but Obama, has hurt his re-election campaign. He either can't, or won't lead, he talks out both sides of his mouth. IMHO, he has been the worst president in history.

Unfortunately, it looks like we will loose either way the next election goes. Obama "the socialist" vs. Romney "the insider". In the end, just like it has been lately, the American people are the ones left in the ditch.

I agree with the previous posters as well. Hurt him? His reign has been an unmitigated disaster. All fluff and no substance. Except for his cronies who line his reelection coffers. Two years he had a majority. And pushed Obamacare. Did nothing to regulate anything. Stimulus money to bankrupt entities. And now flying around campaigning. Hey Nero, Rome is burning....
